Raízen is a powerhouse in sugar, ethanol and bioenergy — a joint venture
formed in 2010 between Brazilian conglomerate Cosan and energy major
Shell, each holding a 44% controlling stake. Ranked as the 3rd largest
company in Brazil by revenue and the world’s biggest producer of
second-generation ethanol (E2G) made from sugarcane waste, Raízen plays
a leading role in the global energy transition, combining Brazilian
agro-industrial scale with Shell’s international distribution and
technology network.

The company operates 35 ethanol, sugar and bioenergy (ESB) plants with
a combined crushing capacity of over 105 million tonnes of sugarcane per
year, and more than 3,000 megawatts of installed electric power capacity
generated from sugarcane biomass (bagasse). Raízen’s proprietary E2G
technology — using Shell Fiber Conversion Technology — converts
sugarcane residue into additional ethanol, unlocking up to 50% more fuel
from the same cultivated land. In the fuel distribution business, Raízen
trades roughly 31 billion liters per year and operates a retail network
of more than 7,000 Shell-branded fuel stations and 1,000+ convenience
stores across Brazil and Argentina.
